Il en est où ce test SEO sur la longueur du contenu ?

Voilà bientôt 6 mois que François Treca et moi avons lancé un “petit test entre amis“ comme il l’a appelé, pour savoir à quel point la longueur d’un contenu pouvait impacter son ranking.

Petit rappel des conditions du test en question :

  • 3 sites mono-pages identiques (même thème, même structure, etc.).
  • Un EMD par site (nom de domaine exact, reprenant la requête).
  • 1 site avec 500 mots, 1 autre avec 1500 et un troisième avec 3000 mots.
  • Tous les sites sont linkés entre eux et depuis nos sites respectifs.

On met tout ça en ligne, on laisse mijoter et on observe.

Alors, d’après vous, ça en est où tout ça ? Qui a remporté la timbale pour l’instant ?

NDLR : Evidemment, au moment où j’arrive enfin à me caler pour débriefer ce test, Google secoue les SERP depuis plus d’une semaine. A voir donc, une fois que les choses se seront calmées (si elles se calment ☹), si les résultats obtenus par les sites seront différents.

Quelles sont les positions des sites en question ?

Je ne vais pas faire durer le suspense davantage, rentrons dans le vif du sujet.

Vous avez peut-être jeté un œil à ces positions si vous aviez vu passer le test au départ. Au moment de l’indexation, le contenu le plus long s’était positionné en P0 sur la requête “longueur contenu Google“.

Eh bien du 24 mai au 23 septembre, c’est bien la position qu’il a occupée. Depuis le 23 septembre, il oscille entre la 2ème et 4ème position. Et c’est exactement depuis cette date que le texte le plus court est venu prendre sa place en occupant la P0 à son tour.

Pour ce qui est de la requête visée au départ, “longueur contenu“, c’est bien le plus long qui est en tête, en seconde position depuis quelques jours. Là encore, il est longtemps resté premier, puis s’est fait dépasser par SEOQuantum, puis par Kinsta. Mais même ces derniers jours, son ranking a eu quelques sursauts en 1ère position.

Un point intéressant : pendant longtemps, le texte le plus long s’est positionné premier sur les requêtes exactes :

  • Longueur contenu 500 mots.
  • Longueur contenu 1500 mots.
  • Longueur contenu 3000 mots.

Désormais, chacun des sites est premier sur sa requête, sauf le plus long ! Maintenant, sur la requête “longueur contenu 3000 mots“, c’est mon site qui a pris la P0.

Dans ce cas, ce doit être dû au fait que j’envoie un lien vers ces 3 sites depuis le widget latéral du mien. Cette liste commence justement par le plus long. C’est donc certainement ce qui a permis à mon site de se retrouver en P0 sur cette SERP.

“Le premier lien a toujours plus de poids“.

Est-ce que le test a révélé quelque chose quant à la longueur du contenu ?

Le premier point mis en évidence, c’est la vitesse à laquelle Google a considéré que le texte le plus long méritait une meilleure position. En quelques minutes, il s’est retrouvé collé en P0 (le bon vieux temps de l’indexation express !).

Doit-on en déduire que Google préfère les contenus longs ? Pas si sûr.

Un contenu plus long est souvent plus détaillé, tant sur le développement de chaque thème abordé, que sur sa structure même. Tout ça doit représenter un bonus dès le départ. En revanche, comme je l’avais dit, je n’ai pas cherché à écrire le guide de référence sur le sujet. J’ai juste développé chaque texte en reprenant des données existantes déjà en ligne et en les compilant et les structurant à ma manière.

Sur le long terme, on voit que chaque site est considéré comme “suffisamment pertinent“ pour camper les premières positions des requêtes sur lesquelles il se positionne. D’ailleurs, je dois avouer que j’ai été surpris quand des blogs comme Semrush (ancien, fourni et trusté) se sont faits doubler illico dès que les nôtres se sont indexés. Certes, il s’agit de très longue traine, mais quand même !

Ceci-dit, j’ai remarqué que depuis le départ deux des sites se disputent la première position sur plusieurs requêtes. Il s’agit du texte le plus court et du plus long. Celui de 1500 mots bénéficie d’une position intermédiaire, ni très bonne, ni mauvaise, mais il flotte vraiment entre deux eaux.

Pour ce qu’on peut en observer jusqu’à présent, Google met plus facilement un texte long en avant, mais sur le long terme, un texte court, détaillé, concis et optimisé peut parfaitement ranker. Parmi les biais évoqués au lancement du test, le temps de lecture avait été cité. Il faut peut-être creuser dans ce sens pour comprendre l’intérêt que porte Google aux textes courts et aux très longs. En revanche, une longueur intermédiaire ne semble conférer aucun bonus particulier.

Sur la longue traine, tout est permis !

Un point est remarquable : même un site tout neuf et un ndd vierge peuvent croquer de très gros sites sur de la (très) longue traine. Et sans forcer côté linking.

Je ne vais rien apprendre aux vieux briscards du SEO, mais effectivement, là on voit bien que sur la longue traine, on peut carrément aller titiller de très gros acteurs du web, et leur piquer des positions intéressantes.

Ce qui est certain, c’est que chacun des textes ayant été optimisé à l’aide de Yourtextguru, aucun ne s’est retrouvé perdu en queue de SERP. J’ai tâché de respecter un maximum de proportionnalité dans l’optimisation sémantique, et il faut croire que ça paie aux vues du classement des sites en question.

Donc, un texte bien optimisé, qui détaille suffisamment son sujet ou qui livre les bonnes infos sur le thème traité, peut ranker sans problème sur de la longue traine.

Que doit-on retenir du test jusqu’à présent ?

Ma première conclusion est un peu sarcastique :

  • Sur un projet, il y a moyen d’occuper pas mal de place sur une SERP longue traine avec plusieurs sites. 😉

Cette conclusion intéressera forcément les gros éditeurs de sites.

Ma seconde conclusion :

  • Quitte à essayer de se positionner sur de la longue traine, autant produire un contenu long et pertinent d’entrée.

Aux vues des bénéfices dont a bénéficié le plus long des textes, il parait assez évident que c’est dans l’intérêt d’un petit éditeur d’occuper le terrain sur de la longue traine en se positionnant bien (voire premier même). Il vaut donc mieux dégainer un bon texte, bien complet et assez exhaustif pour s’assurer de ranker. Tenter de se positionner avec un texte plus court peut demander du temps et de la patience. A voir si le jeu en vaut la chandelle.

Quoi qu’il en soit, je pense que l’optimisation sémantique est nécessaire sur ce type de SERP. Partir avec un site jeune, peu trusté et peu étoffé va demander beaucoup d’efforts. Grâce à une optimisation sémantique bien réfléchie et ciselée, il y a vraiment moyen de faire de très belles choses et de s’économiser pas mal de galères.

Voilà, j’espère que tout ceci vous a intéressé autant que nous. Je ferai un point d’ici quelques temps, histoire de voir comment les choses ont bougé.
